about

Hi, I’m Lea, and I’m so glad you found A Cultural Shift.

If we’ve never met, here’s a little of my story.

I’ve lived a full, and at times unusual, life. Much of it has been spent in Africa as a missionary with my husband and children. Africa has shaped me deeply, and it continues to shape much of what you’ll find here.

To this day, it still amazes me. Other places besides Africa are tame.

A cultural and personal journey

My life has been a series of shifts. Learning to navigate change, both culturally and personally, hasn’t always been easy, but it has been meaningful.

A Cultural Shift is my attempt to share those experiences with you.

There were moments when the shifting felt overwhelming. Times when it came close to undoing me. But in those places, I found a Helper in the shift. Jesus.

He has been my anchor. When everything else feels uncertain, He steadies me.

It is my hope that A Cultural Shift will inspire and encourage you to learn about yourself in the shift.

A few things about me:

  1. I love birds and have had parrots for much of my life. Yes, I have been bitten. It hurts, but I still love them.
  2. I’m a first-generation American of Finnish descent.
  3. I love coffee, but not flavored coffee or flavored coffee creamers. Coffee must be hot, not cold. Please don’t come after me for this.
  4. One of my favorite things to do is hike. I’m not very good at it, but I love it anyway. Someday, I would love to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
  5. I can speak six languages: English, Finnish, French, Swahili, Chichewa, and some Kirundi.
  6. My bucket list includes visiting Turkey. I think the coffee there may be amazing.
