I’m not great at starting conversations. It feels a lot like staring at a blank page, trying to figure out how to begin an essay or article. Writers are taught that the most important part of any piece is the hook. Those first lines are meant to draw the reader in and make them want to keep going.
Are you hooked yet?🪝😂 Have the first few sentences caught your attention? I hope so.
Hooked without words
This morning I found myself hooked when reading Psalm 19:1-6. The thought that drew me in was how nature “tells of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” (Verse 1)
Nature, or the heavens, does not have a voice like we do. It does not speak with words or conversation. And yet, verses 3 and 4 tell us, “There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”
Creation that has no mouth speaks with words that aren’t uttered. It can’t help but show off.
If creation speaks of God’s greatness, how much more should we?

I’ve visited a few art galleries. In them, I have often found myself wondering over the beauty of what has been painted. Earlier this year, I went to the Pretoria Art Museum. I took in the beauty of the pieces that were displayed, wondering at the talent of the various artists. On every rendering, you could see the signature of the artist.
Creation shows off because it was made by God. It is His signature. And Jesus said, if people, God’s living, breathing creation, wouldn’t praise Him, the stones would do our job.
Choosing to speak
I don’t want a stone to take my place so I, as God’s living creation, choose to speak of His glory. I choose to tell of all of the wonderful things He has done for me. I was hooked by the stones. They don’t have life, but I do.
