Meeting Us Where We Are

All of us have had moments (some of us more moments than others!) when we felt discouraged and uncertain about what to do next, when what we needed most was someone willing to meet us where we are. We search for answers from people, only to find they are searching too.

There is Someone waiting, ready to meet us where we are. And He has no agenda other than to lead us on the right path. Experience has taught me, and Scripture has shown me, that God is that Someone.

God meets us where we are. Again and again, He reveals Himself in ways that match the season we are walking through. There isn’t a special place we have to go to find Him; He is wherever we need Him to be. Nor do we need to change anything to meet Him. He takes us as we are.

When Abraham was traveling into the unknown, heading toward a land he did not yet know, the Lord appeared to him as a traveler resting under the trees of Mamre (Genesis 18:1–5). Abraham was on a journey, and Jesus met him there.

Years later, Joshua stood on the edge of a battle he could not win on his own. Israel was about to take possession of the land God had promised them, but the path forward would be through conflict. At that moment, Jesus appeared again, this time as the Captain of the Lord’s Host, a Man of War standing with sword drawn (Joshua 5:13–15).

On both occasions, the Lord revealed Himself in a way that matched the need of the situation.

  • The traveler met the One who would show him the way.
  • The warrior met his Captain.

What Abraham needed in his season was not what Joshua needed in his. Yet the same Lord stood with both of them.

Finding Him where we are

The same is true for us. Yesterday’s grace may not look like today’s grace. The way God strengthened you before may not be the way He strengthens you now. But the promise remains the same. Wherever you find yourself today, Jesus will meet you there.

So the better question may not be, Where is He?

But rather, What do you need Him to be today?

Pay attention to the season you are in. Remember that the Lord often meets us where we are, revealing Himself just as we need Him.
