What’s Trending?

Sitting down with my morning cup of coffee recently, I turned on the news for just a few minutes (because I can’t stand listening for long), and a headline popped up: “What’s trending now…”

The story went on to cover some of the latest and most popular trends. Everything from the useful to the ridiculous was on the list, but a few stood out.

  1. Gourmet coffee: I didn’t know coffee could be gourmet; I thought it came from a bean.
  2. Owling: Sitting on top of a roof mimicking an owl. I don’t need to comment.
  3. Healthy fast food: Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

My mind was spinning, and after a few minutes, I wondered how great it would be to create my own trends. Not to follow what society pushes, but to choose something better.

What’s trending isn’t blue eyeshadow

The word trendsetter means “someone who starts or popularizes a new trend; an innovator.”

Why follow trends? I laugh at some of the ones I once embraced: bell-bottom jeans (yes, I’m dating myself), bright blue frosty eyeshadow… and I’ll stop there before it gets too embarrassing.

Instead of looking back, I’d rather move forward. Not chasing what’s popular, but choosing what matters. Setting a pace shaped by something eternal rather than temporal.

My trend for today comes from Hosea 6:3 (NLT):

“Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know Him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.”

We all know people to some degree: family, friends, those closest to us. We are made to be known and loved. When I feel seen and heard, I naturally want to get to know the other person better. That’s what drew me to my husband and has kept us connected all these years (42 this year, which still amazes me, I guess he likes me 😊❤️).

God created us in His image, and this is what He longs for from us: a connection to Him as Father.

God notices everything about you. He meets you wherever you are: in traffic, at the store, at work, at home. He responds to even the smallest turning of your heart toward Him. He doesn’t want you just to know about Him; He longs for you to know Him.

He knows you already. He values you. He created you just as you are and loves His creation fully.

So I think the question isn’t what’s trending, but what or who are we pursuing?

Take a moment today to pursue a meaningful relationship with God. As you seek Him, you will find Him, and He will reach others through you.
