There’s a reason for everything. We won’t always know the why for everything that happens to us. However, there is always a reason that goes beyond our own wants and needs. Our shopping list prayers keep us myopic, only seeing what is directly in front of us. It’s difficult to see beyond our own issues because they surround us daily. And, it’s only natural to focus on them.
There is a reason beyond ourselves for the mercy that God has shown to us. He observes our situation. And, He extends His mercy to lift us out of the pit we find ourselves in. What a Father we have. But once we receive mercy, what do we do with it?
It’s dangerous to remain like small children who expect life to revolve around them. Naturally, family life does revolve around the children, especially when they are small. As kids grow, they are expected to grow out of selfishness. If we don’t help our children grow beyond themselves, they will be in danger of turning into immature, entitled adults.
There is a reason that the Dead Sea is called the “dead.” It’s called this because it can’t support life. It only has rivers and streams that bring water into it. There are no rivers or streams taking water out of the Dead Sea. This results in a high salt content that prevents everything (save some bacteria) from surviving. Fish that are unfortunate enough to end up in the Dead Sea die. This gives us a picture of a life that only receives and doesn’t give. It won’t support or give life.
There is a reason, God has a plan
God has a purpose and plan for all of us that goes beyond ourselves (see Jer. 29:11). He has wonderful futures in store for us that include serving others. The mercy that God extends to us has purpose. Once we have received it, we are called to give it away.
Showing mercy is easy once you’ve received and understood exactly what it means. God has reason to leave us in our sin – but because of His mercy, He saved us. We didn’t deserve it, but He loved us so much that He couldn’t imagine existing without us.
Again I say, what a Father!
Take a moment to thank God for His mercy that He has extended to you. And then, find ways to extend it to others. You’ll find that giving life will produce life in you.
